COVID Cleaning

In the cleaning industry, when we refer to “high-touch points”, we mean the surfaces and items in a particular space that are touched most by human hands.

Common high-touch points in many workplaces and commercial settings are places like light switches, doorknobs, elevator buttons, keyboards, sink handles, and railings. In normal circumstances, it may be acceptable to clean and disinfect these surfaces once a day, but in the current COVID-19 pandemic, multiple times per day is likely more effective at minimizing the spread of viruses.

Disinfecting is using an appropriate chemical, left to sit on the surface for the recommended dwell time, and wiped with a suitable fiber. Be sure to use a disinfectant with a Drug Identification Number (DIN) as only these products are approved by Health Canada as effective disinfectants.

Cleaning is the use of an appropriate chemical and fiber to remove surface soiling. Some commonly used cleaners are effective against COVID-19 and other germs, but disinfection is still required.

Public Health Ontario advises that high-touch points should be cleaned and disinfected at least twice per day. More information about cleaning and disinfection for public spaces can be found on the Public Health Ontario website.

If you choose to disinfect with diluted bleach, be aware that it is not a cleaner. Surfaces must be cleaned first in order for bleach to be an effective disinfectant.
