How Clean is Your Workstation?

As we all cross our fingers that we won’t experience a fourth wave of COVID-19, businesses everywhere are thinking more about cleaning than they ever have before.

Business owners and managers are concerned about how clean their staff’s workstations are, and what the impact of a potential COVID-19 outbreak would be to their business. Keeping workstations both clean and disinfected is a good way to manage the risk of the spread of germs and viruses in the workplace, including COVID-19.

In recently issued guidelines for keeping your workspace clean in the current COVID-19 climate, the Government of Canada states:

Clean and disinfect surfaces that are touched often, such as:

  • Desks

  • Phones

  • Keypads

  • Cash registers

  • Work surfaces

  • Elevator buttons

  • Restaurant tables

  • Credit/debit card machines

  • Customer service counters

  • Door handles and doorknobs

    • Use products that clean and disinfect, such as commercially available disinfectant solutions or wipes, when available.

    • Disinfect frequently used electronic devices with alcohol (for example, alcohol prep wipes) daily.

    • Make sure your devices can withstand the use of liquids for disinfecting.

Have a look at each workstation in your workplace. What are the frequently touched areas? How often are they being cleaned? How often are they being disinfected? Cleaning removes visible soiling and is a critical first step before proceeding to the second step of disinfection. Attempting to disinfect without first cleaning is ineffective and may leave infectious material such as germs and viruses behind.

In addition to cleaning and disinfecting these surfaces, it’s important to keep hand hygiene in mind as well. All staff should be washing their hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, or if this is not available, using alcohol-based hand sanitizers. Hand washing is most effective and should be used whenever possible.
